WANTED: Great Midwestern camping destinations

We're planning our first family camping trip in September. I'm in Stage 1 of my trip-planning process, which for me is deciding on a destination (fun!). We know we only want to go within 4-5 hours drive from here (Columbus, Indiana, an hour south of Indy) so we don't spend our entire time in the car.

Ideally, we'll find a really scenic spot with good hiking, a quiet campground, and some fun outings we can do in the event of bad weather or just to take a break from camping.

I'm currently flipping through a Kentucky travel guide, and considering Indiana Dunes State Park and Starved Rock State Park in Illinois. But I'm still very open to suggestions, particularly from those who have experienced one of these or another spot first-hand.

Have any favorite midwestern camping destinations you'd recommend? Give me something to daydream about this week and leave me a comment.

This post is a part of Mondays Are For Dreaming, at The Mother of All Trips. Check it out to see what other glorious destinations people are dreaming of today.

  1. Thanks for stopping by and sharing a link - I wish I had some suggestions for you but my better half is pretty opposed to camping. Maybe you can serve as our inspiration!
