Savoring our First British Summer

I'm having one of those weeks... Little Arrow has been grouchy and is barely napping. I picked Big Arrow up from his summer day camp yesterday, only to find him sitting on a bench with a raging fever. Naturally, as tends to be the case in our family, my husband is away on his first business trip since we moved here. So I get to juggle all this by myself for the next few days.

So I sat down tonight, after bedtime duties dragged on for over an hour, and just wanted to see something that would make me smile. And make me thankful for this experience. Cue the family photos on the beach montage.

We headed to Hunstanton a few weeks ago, when the weather forecast promised we could at least put on some shorts without shivering. I asked a few new friends where the closest place to go along the shore was, and one recommended Hunstanton because she knew they had some family friendly amenities.

True enough, Hunstanton has an aquarium, beachside arcade and plenty of seaside shops, cafes and ice cream stands. But we really didn't need any of that. All my boys wanted were a couple of cheap shovels and buckets for collecting shells.

It wasn't the nicest beach I've been to, or the quiantest town, but it was just over an hour from our house, and watching my kids explore the seaside, something so foreign to us Midwesterners, was one of my favorite memories yet.

Heading to Hunstanton? Don't miss the ice cream at The Pavillion. It is homemade and (no kidding) the best thing I've ate since coming to England.

Beyond that, this is just my seasonal plea to get your kids to a beach of some kind before they're too young for sandcastles and rock skipping. If you're anything like me, you'll need the moments to look back on during the not-so-great days.

One place to consider making memories in the UK this summer is at Butlin's.

These seaside and family-friendly resorts have got great deals for September breaks in the UK. I want to check out their Skegness resort for our next seaside adventure, as it's only an hour from our home.
