100 Acres at the Indianapolis Museum of Art: A look back at 2010

I mentioned last week that I wanted to take a look back via photos at some of my favorite outings of 2010. Today I bring you one of our best: a morning at the Indianapolis Museum of Art's 100 Acres outdoor arts park. It combined two of my goals as a parent: allowing my child to experience the great outdoors and introducing him to cultural activities.

I wrote about our time at this wonderful spot here. My favorite piece of art at 100 Acres is Funky Bones, a series of enormous benches that form a human skeleton. But as you'll see in the photo below, the arrow was more interested in the plane flying overhead than the gigantic leg bone sculpture to his right. I'm confident that when we make a return visit, he'll be running all over these bones (and hopefully not breaking one in the process!)

To get a better sense of the Funky Bones installation, watch this video, courtesy of the Indianapolis Museum of Art's website:

  1. I love the idea of blending time outdoors with art. The bone benches sound spectacularly fun for little ones.

  3. So funny that when kids are that young, they are so easily amused (and distracted) no matter what is around them. Love the whole Funky Bones idea.

  4. I remember when my son was 1 we took him to Taronga Zoo in Sydney. He spent the whole time running down the ramps and staring at the fake wood railings. A giraffe almost licked him and he didn't even notice! Funny the things that amuse little kids. Still it sounds like a wonderful park and a great way to get the kids enjoying art. Of course if they had of build a dinosaur skeleton out of bones rather than a human one we'd never get my son (now 5) to leave the park. He'd have his shovel out looking for more!

  5. The IMA has changed so much! I need a summertime trip to Indy to see The Arrow enjoy it as much as we always did!
